Scope and Content

The Granville Skidmore Kennedy Family Papers contain several letters, documents, cards, and photographs mostly addressed to Granville Skidmore Kennedy and his wife Wilma Hoyt Kennedy of Roanoke and later Richmond, Virginia. Some letters are also addressed to their daughter Elizabeth (Betty) Lois Kennedy. This correspondence dated 1935-1972 mostly contains general information about health, work, and life from various people. Most of the letters from 1960-1961 discuss the sudden death of Elizabeth in a car accident. Several financial documents pertain to Elizabeth's belongings and her hospital bill. Additional documents and letters discuss the residence and care of Linda Lanier Kennedy, Granville's sister, and include a 1953 list of alumni from the University of Tennessee's College of Agriculture and an undated letter to "Frank."

Family History

Granville Skidmore Kennedy (1899-1986) was the Director of the Dairy Division of the Virginia State Health Department. His wife Wilma Hoyt Kennedy (1906-1989) was an elementary school teacher in Henrico County and Roanoke County, Virginia. They had three children, including Elizabeth (Betty) Lois Kennedy (1937-1960), a student at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Granville and Wilma lived in Roanoke but moved to Richmond in the mid-1950s. Elizabeth died in a car accident in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1960. Granville also had a sister Linda Lanier Kennedy (1894-1959), whom he helped with her care for multiple sclerosis.
