Lewis Pence Ledgers
Scope and Content
The collection contains two hardcover ledgers belonging to Lewis Pence. The first has around 31 pages binded and 30 loose pages and mostly contains information from 1854. This first ledger also has inscriptions inside the hardcover dated from 1861. The second has around 80 pages and spans from 1866-1889. These ledgers record the business between Pence, a blacksmith, and farms in Edinburg, Virginia.

Biographical Note
Lewis Pence was born in 1825 or 1826 and worked as a blacksmith in Edinburg, Virginia. During the American Civil War, Pence was enlisted into the Confederate Army, serving as a private in Company B of the 97th Regiment of the Virginia Militia, also called Spitler's Militia. He died in 1901 and is buried alongside his wife Ann Pence in the Cedarwood Cemetery in Edinburg.
