Biographical / Historical

Galen Cranz graduated from Reed College with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 1966, and later from the University of Chicago with a Master of Arts in Sociology (1969) and a Sociology PhD (1971). Cranz then went on to teach, acting as a visiting assistant professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology for a year while finishing her PhD. She then worked as an assistant professor at Princeton University for four years from 1971 to 1975. And finally, she moved on to the University of California, Berkeley, where she has served as a professor of Architecture since 1975, teaching social and cultural perspectives on architecture and urban design.

Cranz is a self-described advocate of “Body Conscious Design” and is certified as a teacher of the Alexander Technique with Thom Lemens. Since certification she has conducted many lectures on her perspectives regarding body-conscious design. Throughout her career, she has conducted research on body-conscious design, chairs, and the sociology of space, much of which has gained substantial media attention. She has also won several awards for her projects and publications, including the first prize for the 1985 National Endowment for the Arts Cityscape Design Competition for St. Paul, Minnesota, for her design entry “Northern Lights."

Cranz has written several major works addressing social, cultural, and political components of urbanism, design, and spatial organization. In 1982, Cranz published her first full-length book, The Politics of Park Design: A History of Urban Parks in America; in 1998, she published The Chair: Rethinking Culture, Body, and Design; and in 2016 she published a methodological volume titled Ethnography for Designers.
