Charles H. Pierce Letter

Abstract

The collection contains a letter written July 20, 1861, by Charles H. Pierce to his mother on the eve of the Battle of First Manassas/Bull Run. Pierce was a member of the United States Marine Corps and was present during the battle.

Wilson R. Pilkington Correspondence

Abstract

This collection consists of nine letters written by Wilson R. Pilkington, 41st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment (12th Reserves), to his mother and sister from various locations in Virginia, primarily from camps in northern Virginia. The letters date from 1861-1862. In addition, there is one letter is written from John Moss to Pilkington's mother, informing her of Wilson's death. Pilkington died of wounds received at the Battle of South Mountain, September 15, 1862.

Abstract

This collection contains the diary of William J. Pittenger, a soldier serving in the 93rd Illinois Infantry and the U. S. Army Signal Corps during the American Civil War. Entries cover day-to-day activities, the Union advance down the Mississippi River, and the siege of Vicksburg. The diary is accompanied by a 1957 newspaper article about the diary.

John Pittman Letter

Abstract

The collection contains a letter written by John Pittman, 12th North Carolina Infantry, from camp around Fredericksburg, Virginia, April 23, 1863. The letter is written to his mother and in it he describes his health and that of his comrades. He mentions that his Regiment had been ordered to cook rations and to be ready to move and that three men deserted from the regiment the night before.
