The collection contains correspondence of diplomat William Short with Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, George Tucker and Ben Stoddart, together with other selected materials relating to Short. It also includes microfilm, photostatic copies and typed transcripts. Much of this material was copied from the holdings of the Library of Congress.

This collection contains a letter written by Captain Allen Shortledge of the First Delaware Infantry of Union Army during the American Civil War. He describes enlisting in Wilmington, Delaware, and his posting at Camp Hamilton, near Fort Monroe, Virginia. Attached to the letter is a page containing an engraved image of Fort Monroe and an engraved map of the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. This collection contains a household and farming ledger owned by a Shropshire, England family, dating 1832-1867. Two articles and a letter report the discovery of coal in Shropshire.
