George W. Bonsall Diaries

Abstract

From Cincinnati, Ohio, George W. Bonsall (1845-1910) was a corporal in the 138th Regiment Ohio National Guard (originally formed as the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Reserve Militia) during the American Civil War. The collection consists of two volumes of a manuscript diary, copied in 1865 of entries Bonsall wrote between May 23, 1861 (his 16th birthday) and 1865. The diaries also contain sporatic entries dating through 1878.

Abstract This collection contains the 1864 diary kept by Confederate soldier Lilburn O. Byers (1825-1889) during the American Civil War. Byers writes about battles, troop movements, and events happening in camp. Byers' diary also covers the death of Confederate General William E. Jones. A page at the end contains a letter from Byers to his wife in February 1865 to give the diary to her. This collection contains the American Civil War diary of Lieutenant Thomas C. Chase, 26th Michigan Infantry, Commending Ambulance Corps, 1st Division, 2nd Corps. The diary includes 26 pages of entries from December 1864 through March 1865, mostly while he was in charge of the ambulance corps. Entries contain war news, camp life, records of letters to and from home, and some names and addresses in the back.
