Bear Family Papers,
Black, Kent, and Apperson Family Papers
This collection contains the papers and artifacts of an interrelated family prominent in Blacksburg's history. It includes the Civil War letters of Confederate surgeon Dr. Harvey Black, the Civil War diary of hospital steward John S. Apperson, cotton books and correspondence of Germanicus Kent, nineteenth-century account books of a Blacksburg general store, 1912 European travel diary, and the political scrapbooks of State Senator and Attorney General Harvey B. Apperson.
Alfred Washington Drinkard, Jr., Diary
Director of Agricultural Experiment Station at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, 1917-1945; assistant director of Agricultural Experiment Station, 1945 until his retirement in 1948. Collection consists of a Daily Desk Diary, which mentions persons and events in Blacksburg and at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
Jeremiah White Graves Diary,
The collection consists of a microfilm copy of Graves' extensive diary, and a typescript manuscript of selected transcribed passages from that diary. In his diary, Graves refers to working his farm, the sale of Negroes in the area, and his children's schooling. During the Civil War years Graves mentions the fighting and the war's end. After the war he comments that Negroes could vote while he could not.
John Holliday Diaries and Photographs,
The collection consists of two diaries written by John Holliday between May 1864 and July 1865, and five undated photographs (four believed to be of Holliday and one of his wife).
Benjamin Huddle Diary
The Benjamin Huddle Diary collection consists of a photocopy and transcript of the diary, which describes his experience in the war. The transcript was produced by Randal Huddle of Rural Retreat, VA.
Elva Curl Wilson Diaries
The collection includes the diary of Elva Curl Wilson, resident of Hampton, Virginia and future wife of Rev. James C. Richardson, describing the very active social life of a young woman in Hampton, Virginia during the 1930s.
