Abstract

Map depicting the C & O Railroad network in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern states (Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Washington, DC, and New York. Though undated, the map was issued some time between 1947, when the C & O acquired the Pere Marquette Railway of Michigan and Ontario, and 1972, when it adopted a new corporate name following a merger with the ancient Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.

Aitken's 1776 map, printed in Philadelphia, is largely based on the Fry and Jefferson map of the same area, delineated by Du Simitiè€re. Full title reads: "Map of the Maritime Parts of Virginia, Exhibiting the Seat of War and of Ld. Dunmore's depredation in that Colony." Reproduction is likely a photocopy.

Southwest Virginia sheet only of "A Map of Virginia / Formed from Actual Surveys, and the / Latest as well as most accurate observations, By James Madison, D.D. / Late President of W.m & Mary College," dating to 1807.

The full map was originally printed in six separate sections and then assembled, includes State of Ohio, State of Kentucky and portion of Michigan Territory. The Southwest Virginia sheet includes several counties in Virginia and contemporary West Virginia.

Also includes an illustration of Niagara Falls and the "Industry of ye Beavers of Canada."
