University History

This collection consists a VPI Richmond Club Pendant, previously belonging to L.D. Simmons.

The collection contains correspondence, photographs, and miscellaneous materials relating to the personal life and university and military service of Claudius Lee, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

This collection contains papers belonging to Merwin Leven (1929-2007) during his time as a student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (V.P.I.) from 1948-1950, mostly related to the Corps of Cadets and other student organizations. Contents include club membership cards, V.P.I. military science question and answer sheets, a Company D guard detail sheet, a humorous Company G "delinquency sheet," and a printout of the December 1949 issue of "The Lord Reading Club News."

This four-stringed tenor banjo and case previously belonged to Lewis A. Hall, a member of the Collegians band in the 1920s. Handwritten on the banjo head is "THE COLLEGIANS" in black at the top, "VPI" in red across the center, and "BLACKSBURG, VA." in black on the bottom. The peghead identifies the brandname "Bruno."

Papers--including writings, drawings, and correspondence--of Frank J. Maher (1915-1995), an engineer specializing in aerodynamic research and an instructor in Engineering Science and Mechanics at Virginia Tech from 1937 to 1978. Includes consulting files and wind tunnel research on various building and bridge projects; research project files on aerodynamics and wind loads; academic courses; and materials relating to engineer and bridge designer David B. Steinman.

The J. Paxton Marshall Papers collection contains papers, reports and publications on land use issues in Virginia and surrounding states, as well as a small amount of biographical material. The documents included relate to Marshall’s tenure in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech (1967-1995), as well as his work with various committees and as a technical representative for the General Assembly of Virginia.

The collection contains field notes; essays and studies; laboratory course outlines; printed materials; and photographs of trees on the Virginia Tech Campus from Arthur Ballard Massey, plant pathologist, assistant professor of botany at Alabama Polytechnic Institute, professor of biology at Virginia Tech, and member of the Virginia Academy of Science.

The Larry McBryde Collection on the John McLaren McBryde Family, 1859-2013, contains materials concerning John McLaren McBryde, Sr., his brother Robert James McBryde, and their descendants. Primarily, the collection contains photographs, letters, family histories, and biographies about McBryde, Sr., who was president of Virginia Tech from 1891 thru 1907.
