Scope and Contents This collection contains the papers of the family of Martha L. Robinson Johnson, nineteenth-century matriarch of a Carroll County, Virginia family. The collection consists largely of correspondence to Johnson from various family members and friends, providing a chronicle of the life of a Southwest Virginia family during the mid-nineteenth century, mostly from a feminine perspective. This collection consists of papers of Patricia Givens Johnson, New River Valley local historian. It includes correspondence, subject files, printed materials and photographs. S. Harvey Johnson Copybook

Abstract

This collection consists of the copybook of S. Harvey Johnson, a 19th-century Pittsylvania County, Virginia Methodist minister. Titled "Thoughts, Original and Selected with Incidents, Illustrations, etc.," the book contains passages copied from numerous works, relating mostly to religious matters, including instructions on what and how to preach. Accompanied by an untitled poem by Paul Hayne.

William Martin Johnson Papers

Abstract

The William Martin Johnson Papers include both personal and professional correspondence, ranging from November 1932 to March 1977. Johnson wrote to representatives at Public Works, American Society of Civil Engineers, the Department of Architectural Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and the War Assets Administration, among others. Johnson (1904-1991) graduated from VPI in 1928 and worked as a Civil Engineer for Wiley and Wilson in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Abstract

The Samuel D. Jones Letter to Henry C. Wysor is a letter written on March 10, 1893, from Jones (1856-1930) in Glade Spring, Virginia, to Wysor (1847-1927) in Dublin, Virginia. The letter details a payment for an insurance policy and is written on Southwest Virginia Institute for Young Ladies letterhead. Jones was principal of the institute, and Wysor was an agent for the New-York Life Insurance Company.
