Abstract Jimmie W. Monteith, Jr. (1919-1944) was a Lieutenant in the U. S. Army during World War II. He served his country bravely and was killed on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion of 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The collection consists of letters to Ralph M. Brown, librarian at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), from John P. Sawyer, who graduated from VPI in 1940.

Scope and Contents

Born in Columbus, Ohio, moved to South Charleston, West Virginia in 1925. Attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute from 1937-1941. Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and Purple Heart during World War II. Collection includes photographs, clippings, citations, and papers collected by Lt. Col. John Coulter for his book on the six Medal of Honor winners who were students from Virginia Tech. 

Abstract The papers document the life of Virginia Tech alum Conan W. Vaughan, Jr. (1906-1990) and consist of photographs, correspondence, awards and certificates, newspaper clippings, files, and other literature almost exclusively from Vaughan's tour of duty (1941-1944) in Iceland and Europe during World War II, and his involvement in the U.S. Army Reserve in the late 1940s and 1950s.
