Abstract

The Alexandria and Fairfax Counties [Virginia] Civil War Correspondence consists of 40 letters by 31 soldiers, dated between 1861 and 1862. Letters were written by soldiers stationed in and around Alexandria and Fairfax counties and Washington, D.C., in the first 12-16 months of the American Civil War.

This collection includes an undated Notice of Temperate Meetings held by Rev. J. W. West, Field Secretary of the Anti-Saloon League of Virginia. It includes subjects discussed and testimonials and probably dates between 1903-1909. The Anti-Saloon League of Virginia existed from 1901 to 1933, at the end of prohibition.

This collection includes a memobook and journal owned by Judith Fenner Barnard (1896-1984), a teacher in Roadsville, Virginia, and Prince George County, Virginia. The memobook, dated July 1964, contains recipes, addresses, hospital records, and a seating arrangement for a dinner party. The journal, 1914-1972 includes journal entries about the Barnard family's lives and handwritten recipes.

His letters from 1946 through 1949 are addressed to his girlfiend Rebecca "Reba" Baron in New York City, New York, including love letters to her and descriptions of his travels and work for the union. This collection includes the papers of James R. Perdue and his family. Items include a program for the Battle of the Crater reunion, a Sunday School concert flyer, seven obituaries for Perdue, a letter from J. R. Perdue, Jr., and two ledgers. Perdue (1837-1915) was a banker from Manchester, Virginia, and served as a Confederate soldier in the Otey Battery, Virginia Artillery during the American Civil War.
