John Early Confederate Army Receipt for the Work of Fletcher, an Enslaved Person

Abstract

This collection contains a partially printed receipt for the labor of an enslaved person delivered to Chief Engineer Lt. Col. William H. Stevens in charge of Confederate fortifications outside of Richmond, Virginia, on November 11, 1862. The receipt notes that Stevens received one enslaved person by the name of Fletcher from John Early.

H. J. Eaton Memoir

Abstract

This collection contains an undated memoir written by Corporal H. J. Eaton (1839-1914) covering his service as a Union soldier during and immediately after the American Civil War from 1864 to 1867. In the memoir, the second of two volumes, Eaton discusses several aspects of military life during the war, including marches and the battles of Spotsylvania, North-Anna, Gaines Mills, Bethesda-Church, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg.
