The collection consists of a scrapbook prepared by Harvey E. Shepherd, class of 1932, as a Cadet and graduate student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Also included are loose materials and a white belt with no buckle marked H.E. Shepherd Co. B, which were in the scrapbook.

The collection contains account books, dairy building blueprints designed by Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and various work-related papers created between 1930 and 1953. A few of the items are undated. Thornton ran a dairy and ice operation in Stony Creek, Virginia, in addition to his job as an insurance company medical examiner.

TECH.", VPI seal, and Gobbler icon on the front cover, "TECH Win or Lose" on the top, image of Burruss Hall over the words "Administration Building V.P.I." on the back, and "Universal Match Corp., St. Louis" on the bottom. The inside has a drawing of Rexall drugstore above the words "Corner Drug Store, The Rexall Store, Phone 4321 ... Blacksburg, VA."
