Biographical Note

Joseph Ferdinand Kent, born in 1820, enlisted to serve with the Confederate Army on April 17, 1862. He was commissioned as a Captain into the C Company of the 4th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. In May 1861, Kent was promoted to a Major and eventually became commander of the Wythe County Home Guards. Kent survived the war. He died on September 4, 1886. He was buried in Wytheville, Va.
