Scope and Content

The collection consists of one subsistence order from the Office of Subsistence of Wythe County, VA. Confederate Agent B. Bevell issued the order to Joseph Ferdinand Kent. He was promised "the prices as fixed by the Commissioners of the State...for wheat...above what is necessary for [himself] and family." Additional orders for "Corn, Salted Pork, Bacon, and Beef Cattle" were crossed off from this list." If Kent were to refuse the offer, "the said articles" would be "impressed for the use of the C.S. Army."

Biographical Note

Joseph Ferdinand Kent, born in 1820, enlisted to serve with the Confederate Army on April 17, 1862. He was commissioned as a Captain into the C Company of the 4th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. In May 1861, Kent was promoted to a Major and eventually became commander of the Wythe County Home Guards. Kent survived the war. He died on September 4, 1886. His body was buried in Wytheville, Va.
