Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection consists of a letter from Major A.M. Allen to Major J.B. French, written from Columbus, Georgia December 16th, 1863. Allen complains that his shipments of corn to Richmond are being slowed by want of transportation. Allen arranged to have eight railroad cars utilized for shipping the corn which would make things go quickly. The problem for Allen was in obtaining horses and transportation as the majority was being utilized by the Quartermaster Dept. for use by Robert E. Lee and Braxton Bragg's armies. Allen threatened that if the Quartermasters interfered with his use of the railroad cars he would report them to the Secretary of War. He complains that he has not been able to purchase the new crop of corn in his area.
