Scope and Content

Robert G. Moore was a Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (VPI) graduate of 1922 in Civil Engineering. The collection contains a photo album compiled by Moore of scenes on the VPI campus from 1918-1919. Many of the pictures are clearly identified. Also included are Moore's student handbook, newspaper articles regarding the Corps of Cadets, drawings for engineering, and a photocopy of his obituary.

Biographical Note

Robert Garrett Moore was born to John R. and Mary Elizabeth Ford Moore on August 15, 1897, in Washington, D.C., where his father worked for the U.S. Treasury Department. He moved to Roanoke, Virginia, with his mother following the death of his father, and there attended high school. Moore attended Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, graduating with honors in Civil Engineering in 1922 and becoming a 2nd Lieutenant in the Corps of Cadets. On June 18, 1925, Moore drowned at Fort Humphreys, Virginia, while working as a reserve officer in the U.S. Army.

Abstract

The collection contains a student handbook, newspaper articles, and a photo album of scenes on the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (VPI) campus from 1918-1919, many of which are clearly identified. The collection was compiled by Robert G. Moore (1897-1925), a 1922 VPI graduate.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into two folders. Folder 1 contains the student handbook, photocopied newspaper articles concerning VPI as well as Moore's obituary, and engineering drawings belonging to Moore. Folder 2 consists of the photo album.

Source of Acquisition

The Robert G. Moore Photo Album was purchased by Special Collections in 1992.
