Scope and Content

This collection consists of a bill issued to Elias Crabill by Zea & Pirkey, a Strasburg, Virginia mercantile business. Itemizing goods purchased by Crabill's sister on May 7, 1861, the bill lists such items as food staples (sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg), fabrics (gingham, calico, linen, silk), and clothing accessories (Morocco belt, kid gloves, silk gloves). Included are the prices for each item and a note at the bottom stating that the account was paid in full on March 4, 1862.

Biographical Note

Elias Crabill, son of Abraham and Rebecca Huddle Crabill, was born on January 8, 1826, near Strasburg (Shenandoah County), Virginia. He married Elizabeth Drew Kern (1840-1906) in 1868, and the couple had seven children. Elias Crabill died on July 26, 1890, in Strasburg.
