Scope and Content
The collection contains an arrest warrant for Patrick Keyces (spelling variant Keycas), a deserter from the 30th Virginia Sharpshooters Battalion. Issued on January 30th, 1864, the warrant asks that Patrick Keyces be arrested and brought to the nearest Provost Marshall or Military Post. An officer of the 30th Virginia Sharpshooters Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel John Lyle Clark, reported that Patrick Keyces would be found in Botetourt County, Virginia.

Historical Note
Patrick Keyces was a member of the 30th Virginia Sharpshooters Battalion. Active from September 1, 1862-March 2, 1865, the battalion was made of a collection of transfers and the remaining men from the Gauley Artillery under Captain Stephen Adams and the French's Battery under Captain Napoleon B. French. The battalion engaged in the Western Virginia Campaign, the Battle of Fort Donelson, Cold Harbor, the Battle of Cedar Creek, the Battle of Waynesboro, and the Valley Campaigns of 1864. The battalion also contributed in the battles during the raid on Washington, D.C. On March 2, 1964, the battalion surrendered following the Battle of Waynesboro.
