Scope and Content

The Records of the Office of the Dean of Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, Cynda Ann Johnson contains office files from Cynda Ann Johnson, the founding dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM). This collection includes four series, dating 2008 through 2018.

Series I: Subject Files contain office information, travel information, and the School of Medicine's class information. The series also contains a flash drive, which is currently restricted.

Series II: Publications includes some reports and magazines published by Carilion as well as by local magazines, foundations, or other medical schools.

Series III: Plaques includes an award to VTCSOM for program excellence for 2015-2016 and a proclamation from Carlion Clinic about International Clean Hands Week 2010.

Series IV: Personal Items includes Johnson's personal papers, cards, and correspondence.

Biographical Note

Cynda Ann Johnson became the founding dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) in 2008. During her tenure, VTCSOM became the ninth accredited college at the university. All graduating classes earned 100% match rate to residency programs and exceeded the national mean score on Step 1 and Step 2 licensing exams. She also established the first Department of Interprofessionalism within U.S. medical schools.

Johnson earned her bachelor's from Stanford University, master's in business administration from the University of Kansas, and M.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was professor and head of the Department of Family Medicine, professor in the Department of Community and Behavioral Medicine, and director of the Family Care Center at the University Iowa. She then served as dean of the Brody School of Medicine and Sr. Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical and Translational Research at East Carolina University, where she also led the development of the Center for Health Disparities Research.
