Historical

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad started in 1827 as only 14 miles of track between Baltimore and Ellicot, Maryland, but grew to become one of the largest ralroads in America. As it grew, one of the first acquired railroads they merged with was located in Cleveland, Ohio. This merger added 100 miles of railroad under the name of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. By 1915, the company became the largest in America with 4,535 miles of railroad tracks.

Peter Cooper was a buisnessman who created the steam locomotive known as 'Tom Thumb' in 1830 for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company. This small coal powered locomotive carried passengers at speeds of 10-14 MPH and became a well known addition to the Balitimore and Ohio Railroads.
