Scope and Contents

Four complete letters and two fragments written to Jennie from William. Two letters and at least one fragment were written between 1853 and about 1856 from Chicago, Illinois. They are mainly love notes with family news, but mention in passing immigrants and Cassius M. Clay. The two later letters were written in Lynchburg, Virginia after the couple's marriage. The July 27, 1863 letter discusses possible upcoming battles and the high prices of food during the Civil War.

Abstract Lucy Lee Lancaster was born in Blacksburg, Virginia in 1905 and lived there until she died in 1989. She was one of the first women admitted to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (popularly known as VPI), and after graduating in 1925, she went on to earn her MLS from Columbia University Library School. The Leftwich Family Letters include correspondence from James B., William, and Thomas Leftwich in addition to missives from a family friend and a bereaved lover. The soldiers' letters issue from American Civil War battlefronts and provide insight into significant battles (the Battle of Bull Run), war-time trade, and the daily routine of a soldier.

Abstract

The Letters to Eliza Doty were written by her unnamed sister, probably Sarah Poindexter, to Eliza in New Providence, New Jersey, on April 28, 1868, from Richmond, Virginia, and April 1, 1869, from Culpeper, Virginia. The letters contain information on the declining economic conditions in Richmond, and the sister's negative feelings about reconstruction conditions in Virginia.

Abstract

This collection contains the correspondence of Nathan L. (1819-1909) and Sarah A. B. Lincoln Look (1826-1857), who settled in Virginia in the 1840s and lived in Loudoun, Botetourt, Montgomery, and Smyth counties. There is also correspondence with other members of the Lincoln and Look families in Massachusetts and New York; together with transcripts and summaries of the letters; and a few pieces of miscellanea.

Fannie Lorentz Letter

Abstract

The Fannie Lorentz Letter is by Lorentz (1829-1864) to her husband Mifflin (1823-1891), dated April 12, 1862, from "Cabin Home" (now Shawsville), Virginia. Lorentz describes recent events in her and her children's lives, such as problems with getting wood, issues with hens, and being ill. She also discusses a letter she read to her neighbor from Jimmie Langhorne about being wounded by "Yankees" in Delaware during the American Civil War.
