James and Jehu Barnard Letter

Abstract
The collection contains a letter written by James and Jehu Barnard of Patrick County, Virginia to their parents. Both were members of Company K, 50th Virginia Infantry. Written from camp at Orange Court House, Virginia, March 29th, 1864. Letter shares news of stoppage of furloughs and opinions that a new campaign was in the making.

This collection includes a memobook and journal owned by Judith Fenner Barnard (1896-1984), a teacher in Roadsville, Virginia, and Prince George County, Virginia. The memobook, dated July 1964, contains recipes, addresses, hospital records, and a seating arrangement for a dinner party. The journal, 1914-1972 includes journal entries about the Barnard family's lives and handwritten recipes.

Scope and Contents
This collection contains one list of free Negroes and Mulattoes, compiled by James Barnett, district commissioner of revenue, Montgomery County, Virginia. The list includes places of residence of the free persons as well as a brief job description for each. The list divides Mulattoes from Negroes and while the Mulattoes consist of three families totaling fifteen persons, there are only two Negroes, one of whom is John Hope, father of one of the Mulatto families.
