Abstract

The collection consists of a Babcock's diary from 1864. Entries detail camp life throughout parts of Virginia, the siege at Petersburg, and his experiences with guard, orderly, and police duties. Babcock served with the 10^th Regiment, New York Heavy Artillery.

Abstract

Diary maintained by Stephen R. Kelsey between January and May, 1865, while in New York and Virginia with Battery I, 5th U. S. Artillery, during the American Civil War, with entries discussing the occupation of Petersburg, Virginia, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and the capture of Jefferson Davis. Accompanied by a typescript biographical essay by Ernest Flint Kelsey, Stephen Kelsey's nephew, commenting on his uncle's military service.

Abstract The collection includes William A. Leonard's letters home from February-July 1865, as well as his diary from August 1864-April 1865. Leonard served as an ambulance driver in and around the siege at Petersburg, which is the focus of his short diary entries. His early letters focus on war news and rumors, daily life, and news from home. Post-surrender letters emphasize Leonard's experiences while stationed around Washington, DC, daily life (including the growing frustrations of soldiers...

This collection contains the journal of Philip G. Peltz, chief engineer of the U. S. S. Dacota during the American Civil War. It also includes a typed, bound transcription of the journal.
