Scope and Contents Among those papers included in the collection is an edited transcript of the diary of Jasper Hawse (1835-1905), a Civil War soldier born in Hardy County, Virginia. At the beginning of the Civil War Hawse enlisted in the 14th Regiment, Virginia Militia, which became the 7th Virginia Cavalry Regiment in March 1862. Thomas Nelson Conrad (1837-1905) served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War and as President of Virginia Tech. The collection consists of the original manuscript of The Rebel Scout: A Thrilling History of Scouting Life in the Southern Army, written by Conrad from 1891 to 1893, and published in 1904.

Abstract Lucy Lee Lancaster was born in Blacksburg, Virginia in 1905 and lived there until she died in 1989.
