Letters

This collection contains a short letter from Charles A. Townsend, chief clerk of the United States of America, while at Guantánamo, Cuba, on August 14, 1898, during the Spanish American War, to his brother, Joseph Townsend. The letter discusses events during the Spanish-American War in Puerto Rico, including racist remarks about the troops of color fighting in the war.

This collection contains two empty envelopes from the commisioning of the aircraft carrier, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, on October 18, 1977, named in honor of the late U.S. President. The envelope also has the name of the Captain of the ship, who was William E. Ramsey.

The collection includes a letter from Margaret and Ames Vanwormer to brother, regarding news of family and acquaintances.

This collection contains a letter written by Private Oscar L. Whitelaw of the 15th Vermont Infantry Regiment of the Union Army on December 20, 1862, during the American Civil War. Whitelaw describes the march from Camp Vermont to the Fairfax County Courthouse, as well as camp life, Confederates in Richmond, and his feelings about the war.

This collections contains papers and letters addressed to Henry Whitman, the Justice of the Peace for Wythe County, Virginia, in the mid-1800s. Most documents contain information about different legal dispitutes and issues. Two relate to the purchasing of a bridle and of leather, and another letter relates information about the American Civil War.
