Clifford, Shirley Mittleman, 1923-1997
Biographical Note
Shirley Catherine Mittleman was born June 2, 1923, in Philedelphia, Pennsylvania, and lived until November 20, 1997. She served in the United States Marine Corps in the Women's Reserve from 1943-1945. She married Alan Frank Clifford (1919-1995) on August 20, 1949, in Philadelphia. The Cliffords moved to Blacksburg when Alan Clifford became a professor of chemistry and head of the chemistry department at Virginia Tech in 1966. In the collection, Shirley Clifford's Certificate of Registration stated her occupation as "housewife." The couple had two children, including Abbie Louise Clifford who married John Chandler Wysor III.

Shirley Mittleman Clifford Papers
This collection contains a number of personal correspondence between Shirley Mittleman Clifford and family while Clifford was living with her husband in the United Kingdom. This collection also contains various financial and legal documents as well as a menu and program. Clifford (1923-1997) was a former member of the Women's Reserve of the United States Marine Corps.
Clifford-Wysor Collection
This collection consists primarily of pocket/folded maps and travel guides from about 1852-1955. In addition, there are personal papers from the Clifford and Wysor families, some of whom are likely responsible for collecting the maps and guides. The personal papers date from 1951-1958.
