Clifford, Alan F., 1919-1995
Biographical Note
Alan F. Clifford (1919-1995) was a professor of chemistry and head of the chemistry department at Virginia Tech from 1966-1989. He received his B.A. from Harvard in 1941 and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Delaware in 1947 and 1949, respectively. Clifford worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II and spent two years at Cambridge University on a Guggenheim Fellowship from 1953-1955.
Clifford married Shirley Catherine Mittleman (1923-1997) on August 20, 1949, in Philadelphia. The couple had two children, including Abbie Louise Clifford who married John Chandler Wysor III.

Shirley Mittleman Clifford Papers
This collection contains a number of personal correspondence between Shirley Mittleman Clifford and family while Clifford was living with her husband in the United Kingdom. This collection also contains various financial and legal documents as well as a menu and program. Clifford (1923-1997) was a former member of the Women's Reserve of the United States Marine Corps.
Clifford-Wysor Collection
This collection consists primarily of pocket/folded maps and travel guides from about 1852-1955. In addition, there are personal papers from the Clifford and Wysor families, some of whom are likely responsible for collecting the maps and guides. The personal papers date from 1951-1958.
