Abstract

The collection contains two handwritten recipe books from the Thomas Family of Baltimore, Maryland. These cookbooks highlight Maryland specialities (oysters, clams, crabs, and terrapins), as well as preserves, cakes, puddings, and other dishes. The majority of the recipes range from the 1870s to the 1910s, but at least one dates back to 1831.

Henry Goddard Thomas Letters and Memoirs

Abstract Henry Goddard Thomas was born in Maine and entered the American Civil War as a private yet rose to the rank of brigadier general by the war's end. After 1862 he was involved with the recruitment and organization of Black troops in the Union Army. He commissioned several troops, in particular the 79th and 19th U.S. Colored Infantries.
