Nine wartime letters written by Alfred Thompson, a soldier in Company H (and later Company A), 49th Pennsylvania Infantry during the American Civil War, from various camps in Virginia, addressed to David May of Spruce Creek, Pennsylvania.

Edward Everett Thompson (1911-1989) was a veterinarian who established the Salem (Virginia) Veterinary Hospital and a Major in the Veterinary Corps of the U. S. Army during World War II. The collection includes scrapbooks of a 1932 ROTC camp, Burma, New Guinea, World War II photographs, and China in 1981. A second scrapbook contains letters, cards, newspaper clippings, and photographs of politicians Richard Nixon, Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, Nancy Reagan, and Charles Robb.

The collection includes American Civil War-era letters (all photocopies, with one exception) of the Thurman family of Chesterfield and Fluvanna counties, Virginia, including letters from Meredith Branch Thurman (14th Virginia Infantry) and Robert H. Thurman (41st Virginia Infantry) to Jane Rosser Humphrey Thurman, their wife and sister-in-law respectively.
