Abstract

The collection consists of a Union soldier's letter, written by Corporal Wayne Thurman, Co. C, 42nd Indiana Vols., Calhoun, [Kentucky], dated December 26, 1861. The letter, written to Thurman's brother, Francis Marion Thurman, discusses camp happenings, including sickness, death, housing, and fights amongst the regiment.

Abstract

This collection includes letters from James R. Tice, a Confederate soldier in Company B, 42nd Virginia Infantry during the American Civil War, to his sister (Martha A. Tice Light) and brother-in-law (Jim Light). The letters contain references mostly to family and personal matters but also mention the battles of Cross Keys and Port Republic, the death of Turner Ashby, the capture of Union provisions in Romney and the war-time prices of various goods.

William S. Tippett Letter

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a single letter from Sgt William S. Tippett to his wife, Maggie. Written from a parole camp in Annapolis, Maryland, the letter opens with Tippett's comments on news from home. A majority of the letter, however,details his stay in Belle Island prison (Richmond) from September 1863 until early March 1864. In particular, he describes the food (or lack of) and the poor conditions.

This collection contains an account book kept by J. M. Tise, manager of the Floyd County Electric Company at Sower's Mill Dam in Floyd County, Virginia, from 1923 to 1934. This collection also contains receipts kept by the Tise family from 1825 to 1865.
