Isaac Horne Ledgers

Abstract

This collection contains seven ledgers and one letter from the estate of Isaac Horne (1801-1878) of Glade Spring, Washington County, Virginia. The ledgers show the Hornes owned a dry goods, fabric and tanning business. Transactions are recorded selling leather items to Confederate Soldiers during the American Civil War.

Abstract

The scrapbooks in this collection contain holiday cards, advertising and trade cards, and illustrations of people, animals, and flowers. One of the scrapbooks and some pages belonged to the Bennett family of Kansas. Some of the loose scrapbook pages were likely created by the Parmelee family of Connecticut. The owners and creators of the other scrapbooks and loose pages are unidentified.

The [Benton] Ledger and Scrapbook is a single item used as both a ledger and a scrapbook. The name Benton appears at the top of pages of the ledger, which may be the location of the business, probably a general store in Benton, Holmes County, Ohio. The ledger lists goods sold and names of customers, while the newspapers include poems, short stories, marriages, obituaries, and more.

Bertram A. Holtzworth Scrapbook

Abstract

This scrapbook contains photographs and memorabilia dating 1918-1926 from United States Military Academy (West Point) and Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) by Bertram A. Holtzworth, who attended VPI before graduating from West Point in 1927. He served in the U.S. Army from his time as a cadet at West Point until his retirement as Major General in 1963.
