Eleanore Pettersen Architectural Collection,

Abstract Eleanore K. Pettersen (1916-2003) received a Certificate in Architecture from Cooper Union for Advancement of Science and Art in 1941, and was an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin from 1941-1943. She was one of the first women licensed as an architect in the state of New Jersey in 1950, and was the first woman in New Jersey to open her own architectural office. J. C. Porter Photograph Album

Abstract

The J. C. Porter Photograph Album contains a scrapbook of approximately 240 photographs (all c. 1880) of structures and scenes in several southwestern Virginia counties, including Bland, Craig, Giles, and Smyth. It includes photographs of a Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad station in New Castle and Mountain Lake resort hotel. Photographs are believed to have been taken and compiled by Porter.

Scope and Contents

Historic home of Blacksburg, Virginia, built by the Preston family in the early 1800s. Purchased by the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) in 1872, and remains the oldest building on campus. Photographs consist of thirty-four mounted photographs from Eleanor Stover McEver's collection of various views and details of Solitude, with identifying labels. Also includes other papers, such as newspaper clippings and postcards, with information about Solitude.
