Abstract This collection contains the diary of Margaret Selden Kennedy Ross (1902-1982) of Warrenton, Virginia. The diary dated February-September 1915 depicts the daily life of a young girl in the early 20th century. Ross mostly talks about school, teachers, and classmates, with whom she spent most of her time. Her great-grandfather was Maryland Senator Anthony Kennedy, and her grandmother was Mary Selden Kennedy, author of the book Seldons of Virginia and Allied...

William Q. Thomson Day Book

Abstract

This collection is a ledger or day book used by enslaver and farmer William Q. Thomson of Happy Valley, Louisa County, Virginia, dated 1845-1854, 1882-1891. The book includes debts to associates, purchases, and bills paid, including for family members. Some of the early entries are for hiring the labor of enslaved people. Thomson (ca. 1825-1891) enslaved at least 22 people, inlcuding Georgeanna and her baby Peter Dudley.

Abstract

This collection contains a rental receipt for the labor of Isaac, an enslaved man. The receipt was issued by the Virginia Central Railroad Company in 1855 to Mrs. Elisabeth S. Lindsay and promises a payment of $175 to Lindsay after the one year rental period ends.

Virginia Manual Labor School of the Negro Reformatory Association of Virginia Letter

Abstract

This letter was sent from G. C. Shippen, acting superintendent of the Virginia Manual Labor School of the Negro Reformatory Association of Virginia, to Mr. F. W. Whittaker of Lynchburg. This letter is a response to a request to commit a young man named Lucien Gilmore to the institution. Shippen writes that the institution is at capacity and that it will be six weeks before they can accept any new inmates.
