Matthias Harter Letters

Abstract

Three letters from Matthias Harter, a private in Company C, 9th Iowa Infantry, written during the American Civil War to his wife Sallie, and discussing such subjects as the Battle of Altoona Pass, General George McClellan's declining reputation, the price of food for civilians, General William Tecumseh Sherman's farewell speech to Harter's division, and the effects of war on a veteran.

John Harville Diaries

Abstract The collection contains eight handwritten diaries chronicling John Harville's experiences during the American Civil War. From August of 1861 to January of 1864 Harville served with the 7th Wisconsin Regiment, Company F. He then transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps for the remainder of his term, ending in July 1864. This collection contains the manuscript draft of the American Civil War reminiscences of Herman Haupt, who served as the chief of construction and transportation for the military railroad system for the Union Army.
