Letter written from Massachusetts by "thy loving Madre" to "My dear Henry" during the American Civil War, mentioning the hardships and benefits of soldiering, the camp experiences of "Eddie C. W." [Edmund C. Whitney, 53rd Massachusetts?], the barracks at Camp Stevens in Groton Junction, but focusing largely on personal matters.

This collection consists of twenty-two letters of outgoing correspondence from Union soldier Hiram Matthew to his wife Elmira Matthew of Campbellsburg, Washington County, Indiana.

The collection inlcudes the American Civil War diary of Corporal John R. Maybury of Company L, 10th New York Cavalry, describing winter camp activities and routines, as well as skirmishes and battles with the enemy in northern and eastern Virginia.

The collection contains a letter from John McCauley of Salem, Virginia to "Edward," describing arrival at home, advising Edward not to accompany fellow soldiers who steal from the local populace, and relaying news of an upcoming benefit exhibition for the soldiers in the area. Also includes a letter to "Susan," detailing excitement around the regiment's experiences in First Bull Run (1861).

The collection consists of a letter signed "McCurdy" written on December 19, 1862 to "Dear Friend Sara." The letter includes detailed descriptions of the fighting around Fredericksburg in December 1862.

This April 21st, 1863 letter is from John F. McDonald, Confederate North Carolina soldier to his cousin, also named John McDonald, describing the Richmond Bread Riot of April 2nd, 1863. McDonald describes around three thousand women rioting and plundering stores for food and jewelry and he clarifies that none were the wives of soldiers. Included is the envelope.
