MSS. Manuscript Collections

This collection contains a set of thirteen "Make America Stong" posters that were published by the U. S. Department of Agriculture and the U. S. Government Printing Office in 1941 during World War II. These posters promote dietary needs, healthy eating habits, and ways to fight food insecurity.

The collection consists of the diary of Charles O. Poland, a private in Company B, 142nd Ohio Infantry (National Guard), written while serving for six weeks near the front during the early siege of Petersburg.

The collection consists of a Civil War diary of Captain Daniel A. Lowber, Company A, 37th Wisconsin Infantry, which served in the siege of Petersburg, Virginia.

The collection includes the diaries of Elva Curl Wilson (1911-2006), resident of Hampton, Virginia and future wife of Rev. James C. Richardson, describing the very active social life of a young woman in Hampton, Virginia during her late teens and early twenties.

This collection includes the accounts ledger for an unidentified automotive repair shop in Timberville, Virginia, containing customer names together with itemized charges for parts and services on repairs and maintenance.

The collection includes a letter from Jack Foster, a formerly enslaved person and body servant in the 36th Virginia Infantry, to Confederate General John McCausland, reminiscing about the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain and his time in camp service during the American Civil War.

The collecon consists of papers centering on William Stephen Moss, a Confederate prisoner of war during the American Civil War. Includes an identification card, letters from Moss to his mother, a biography written by his son, and a photograph of Moss.

The Leftwich Family Letters include correspondence from James B., William, and Thomas Leftwich in addition to missives from a family friend and a bereaved lover. The soldiers' letters issue from American Civil War battlefronts and provide insight into significant battles (the Battle of Bull Run), war-time trade, and the daily routine of a soldier.

The collection includes World War II letters of George Marinor Parker, Jr., Army Air Force, of Water View, Virginia, his mother's wartime diary, and related ephemera and correspondence.

This collection includes a recipe book containing hand-written recipes for soups, salads, puddings, cookies, cakes, icings, and biscuits. The date, location, and full author name remain unknown.
