MSS. Manuscript Collections

The collection includes a bound expense/account notebook of James P. Hawkins, agent of the Southern Express Company, which also contains diary entries from 2 April - 10 April 1865. Also included are a collection of loose pages with Hawkins's diary entries for 11 April - 11 May 1865. Related documents, including special orders, exemption from military service, receipts, Oath of Allegiance, letters (2), envelopes, and a photograph complete the collection.

The collection includes the journal of John R. Cason, a Confederate Lieutenant and one of the Immortal 600, containing lists of other prisoners he encountered following his capture at the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War.

This collection consist of a handwritten book from Hertford, England, containing recipes for home remedies, household items, rat poison, cakes, breads, meats, stews, beverages (ales), and more.

The collection contains a letter of invitation dated December 17, 1861 from Anna Lee to General P. G. T. Beauregard to attend a country dance on Christmas evening at Meadow Farm, Virginia, home to the Sheppard Family in Henrico County. Attributed to Anne "Annie" Carter Lee (1839-1862), fourth child of General Robert E. Lee and Mary Randolph Custis.

The collection contains a letter of Martha McDonald to her husband, Lewis McDonald, a soldier in the Confederate Army, written in Rutherford County, North Carolina, on September 15, 1862, during the American Civil War.

The collection contains a letter from future Confederate Army Brigadier General, Alexander Welch Reynolds, dated July 13, 1861 from Wythevllle, Virginia and addressed to his sister in Lewisburg, Virginia.

The collection consists of letters, government issued documents, printed material, and two photo albums of Dr. Stanford E. Chaillé, Confederate surgeon during the American Civil War and dean of Tulane University's medical school. Significant topics include the Union occupation of New Orleans, postwar elections, Dr. Chaillé's medical career, and Chaillé genealogy. Materials cover the period shortly before the Civil War to the early twentieth century, and deal mostly with New Orleans.

This collection contains the letters of the Baldwin family of Tazewell County, Virginia. The collection consists largely of American Civil War-era letters of Captain Denison B. Baldwin, an officer in the 51st Virginia Infantry Regiment and the 23rd Virginia Infantry Battalion, to his wife Sallie Barnes Baldwin.

The collection contains the diary of Sue R. Preston, a young middle-class woman of Detroit, Michigan and later nurse-in-training at Sarah Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, dated January 7, 1907 to October 13, 1907. Describes her daily activities in Detroit, including shopping, reading, watching her favorite stage personalities at the Temple Theatre, and following the famous Thaw Murder Trial. Enclosed are numerous newspaper clippings that pertain to the trial and theater gossip.

The Wood, Kasey, and Wood Account Books document the transactions of a general store and zinc distributor in Max Meadows, Virginia, during the mid- to late nineteenth century. Materials include two detailed ledgers, three day books, and one cash book.
